Distinguish between primary research data (e.g., raw materials generated via interviews, surveys, or usability tests) and secondary research sources (e.g., peer-reviewed academic journals, books, trade publications, or corporate documentation) to appropriately choose evidence that supports a technical audience.
Design, ethically administer, and analyze targeted data collection tools tailored to extract actionable insights from specific audiences or subject matter experts (specifically user surveys and structured interviews).
Critically evaluate external documents for accuracy, timeliness, relevance, focus, and rigor of publication by applying a rhetorical reading framework (analyzing logos, pathos, and the credentials/bias of the author or publishing entity).
Navigate the complexities of collaborative technical writing by applying strategic project management plans, resolving communication hurdles, balancing team dynamics, and distributing workloads to avoid common group friction.
Integrate multiple source types and peer feedback into a single, unified technical document that uses formal citation conventions to establish credibility with an academic or professional audience.

Zotero is a citation management tool that I personally use for all of my research writing. It is especially helpful for keeping track of citations within a document and ensuring nothing gets missed on the references page. I even used it for my dissertation!
More than Memos is a YouTube account with some really great analyses of different examples of technical communication. With each module, I'll assign you a video to watch with a different example. Enjoy!
In technical writing, effective collaboration and project planning are crucial skills. This discussion explores team dynamics and planning strategies through a real-world scenario.
A team has been assigned to research a significant workplace or community issue and produce a formal recommendation report. After receiving the project guidelines, the team held their first planning meeting. Review the following team conversation:
Team Member 1: "The project guidelines give us flexibility in choosing our research topic. I've noticed some interesting issues in our campus parking system that we could investigate. I can start gathering some preliminary data and draft an outline for our next meeting. What do you think?"
Team Member 2: "That works for me. I can create surveys and graphs to visualize our findings. I enjoy working with data presentation."
Team Member 3: "Sounds good! Just send me what you have when you're ready, and I'll help with editing and formatting. Let me know what else you need."
Discuss:
Analyze the effectiveness of this research team's initial planning approach:
What critical research planning elements are present or missing?
How might this planning strategy affect the quality and credibility of their research?
What potential issues could arise in developing evidence-based recommendations?
Evaluate the team's collaboration method:
Identify potential risks and benefits of their current approach.
Assess how research responsibilities are being distributed.
Consider the implications for data collection and analysis.
As a research project consultant, what specific recommendations would you provide to:
Strengthen their research methodology
Ensure comprehensive data collection
Establish proper documentation and citation practices
Create a systemic approach to developing recommendations
Maintain effective team communication
Drawing from your own research experience:
How would you structure this team's initial research planning meeting?
What research planning tools or frameworks would you recommend?
How would you ensure all team members contribute meaningfully to the research process?
You don't need to respond to every question here--this is just a list of ideas for you to engage with.
You do need to respond to at least one classmate.
